Diabetes High and Rising
One of the worst public health prophecies seem to be more than met in Argentina. As in the rest of the region, diabetes is increasing, and its prevalence in urban areas of the country and more than 50% world average: 6.2% compared with 4%, as revealed Carmela study.
If everything continues as before, will comply with the provisions of the World Health Organization (WHO), which forecast an increase of diabetes of 75% for 2030, said Dr. Herman Schargrodsky, director of the study, which evaluated the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in Latin American cities.
“If so, by 2030 we expect 11% of diabetes in the urban population of Argentina, which will lead to increased cardiovascular disease, especially coronary disease,” he added Schargrodsky, Cardiology Service, Hospital Italian.
People with diabetes, a disease that is characterized by abnormally high levels of blood sugar, have the same cardiac risk that a person has already suffered a heart attack, said the cardiologist. High rates of diabetes observed in the study Carmela as young as 35 years? 5.9% of the locals aged between 35 and 44 years have diabetes? are already showing their effects in the office.

“Before it was rare to see a stroke in a young patient, and today it is not unusual: we see many patients, mostly men between 30 and 40, arriving with a heart attack or acute coronary syndrome, and many of them are obese and have diabetes, “said Dr. Carlos Boissonnet, Cemic cardiologist and coordinator of the study in Argentina Carmela.
The study shows a predominantly male face of diabetes, where the disease strikes at a much higher proportion than women, at least until age 55, when rates are equated. This trend is opposite to that seen in developed countries, where women are the ones who are most affected by diabetes.
The weight of obesity
Carmela The results of the study, which evaluated the cardiovascular risk factors in 11 550 people between 25 and 64 years from eight cities, were recently published in the journal Diabetic Medicine.
How Argentina is located within the context of the region? “Leaving aside Mexico, which is one of the five countries with the highest rates of diabetes, Argentina is in the middle range,” said Boissonnet.
A mid-range in a context of concern diabetes rates. “The region has a prevalence of diabetes that are too high,” he warned.
“It is estimated that between 2000 and 2030 diabetes could rise to 70% in Latin America,” said Schargrodsky, president of the InterAmerican Heart Foundation, an institution between 2003 and 2005 carried forward the study Carmela. If so, he added, “would spend more than 6% of diabetes by about 11 percent.”
What are the causes behind the increase in diabetes? “The increasing prevalence of diabetes has been associated with the epidemic of obesity, where excess weight is responsible for 90% of type II diabetes,” reads the study.
The link between obesity, overweight and diabetes is exposed in the intersection of risk factors assessed in the Carmela. “It was noted that obese individuals with obesity or abdominal (a waist circumference greater than 102 cm in men or 88 cm in women) were 5-6 times more likely to be diabetics compared to normals. Those who were overweight, 2 3 times more, “says the study.
“It is essential that campaigns that promote healthy eating and increase physical activity, and make them since childhood,” he concluded Schargrodsky.
